The castellated/cellular beams and the beams with web openings are compound beams consisting of a straight or a welded beam and web openings. As any compound beam, the castellated/cellular beams can be treated as a single beam or split beams.
Design Guide 31 provides a brief history of castellated and cellular beams and highlights recent innovative applications and potential economic benefits of their use. The current state of practice of the design of castellated and cellular beams is presented, including differences in failure modes with traditional beams.
The display type can also be separated or complete. The castellated and cellular beams are considered already fabricated. The beam with web opening is an 'I' section with various types of cuttings (hexagonal, circular, rectangular, etc.) on its web. By default, all these special type beams are considered 1 beam, completely displayed. In this situation, the 'Name' field should be completed with the desired name that will appear in detail title and in the BOM. If the 'Name' field is empty, then only the length will be displayed in the detail's title, according to the 'Compound beam name' default value.
In order to create the single parts and assembly detail drawings, the elements must be numbered accordingly. Using the 'Sp – Beam front, top, bottom 1:10 CX' drawing style to obtain a single part detail, in the detail's title the beam length appears twice, once because the 'Compound beam name' is configured to display the length and the second time because the used drawing style is configured to display the beam length. In this situation, it is recommended to modify the default property's value or to create a new drawing style for the castellated/cellular beam and the beam with web openings, and to edit the title in order to display only the quantity and name of the beam.
The resulting single part detail contains dimensions for the web opening which should be eliminated, because these types of beams are considered fabricated. Only the new cuts (features) or holes should be dimensioned. In the 'Material list', the name displayed for these beams on the 'Name' column is the same as the one displayed in the detail's title. In the 'Compound beam list', the name of the profile section is displayed. For the compound elements, the resulted NC files do not contain the proper information to fabricate the castellated/cellular beam, nor the beam with web openings. If the castellated/cellular beam or the beam with web openings is considered as a split beam, separately displayed, the name that will appear in detail's title and in BOM is the section name.
The presentation in single part detail is also different. According to the 'Necessary View Wizard', only the front view is displayed because there aren't any features or holes on the flanges. The helper lines and the corresponding angle dimensions are displayed according to the beam presentation configuration from the detail style used. The resulting single part detail also contains dimensions for the web openings, which should be eliminated. Only the new cuts (features) or holes should be dimensioned. In the 'Material list', the name displayed for the castellated/cellular beam and the beam with web openings in the 'Name' column is the profile section from which the beam was created.
