Hi guys, sorry to see you are all having the same problem as me, its been grating on me for months now but i've still not figured it out. The problem i have is a high pitch crackling sound coming through the speakers when i'm watching the Sky Movies channels. I don't think i've ever noticed it on any other channel that broadcast in Dolby Digital. For example, today, i watched the F1 which is in 5.1 and don't notice any crackling.
Later i watched some Modern Family in stereo, no problem. Just now i watched The Great Gatsby on Sky Movies in HD with 5.1 and plenty of annoying crackling. Like mentioned previously, it seems to happen more notably when there is some low bass, thuds, rumbling, explosions, bass drum in music. A test i went through today was the end credits song, Together by The XX set it off a lot.
Its an open, sparse song with a deep bass drum sound. I played the song from Spotify through the Apple TV and no problem, sounded as you'd expect it to. So i swapped the cables around, plugged the Apple TV HDMI into the Sky box and got crackle from the Sky broadcast of that same song. I set the Sky sound settings from DD to stereo, still a crackling. I tried using the optical output from the Sky box, still the crackling. Pretty sure i've never heard the crackling from any DVD or BluRays movies i've watched.
I'm pretty sure its just Sky Movies. So i think i've eliminated the HDMI cables, the Optical cable option, 2 inputs on my amp, both sound options from the Sky box, even played with different settings in the amp menus but haven't found a solution.
3-4 year old Sky HD box (manufacture Sky it says) Model: R009.066.77.03P Version: 4f3103 Receiver ID: C2BD0 1090 Denon AVR-2311 receiver B&W CM7s with the CM Centre B&W PV1 sub, crossover being sorted digitally by the Denon any help would be great, i'll call Sky at some point too but it sounds like they've not helped anyone here so far.:~/. Once you've eliminated the obvious local sources of possible crackling I don't think there's much more you can do. There is clearly an issue with some Sky movie broadcasts. I have two completely different systems in two different rooms, with no common components other than the Sky dish and I can reproduce the crackling sound on certain movies on both systems. Usually during scenes with low bass content. I have no issue with any other sources, even when playing the same movies.
