OK, I’ve been doing a lot of homework in preparation for my controller upgrade. I think I’m ready to take the plunge. I’ve scoured this board for info, and felt it’d be wise to start a new thread. For some history, it’s an ’83 Wells Index, Sharnoa Tiger 3 controller. I am trying to get information on my DC Servo Motors.
The tag reads: PM Field DC Servo Motor, Waltham, Mass, SN 108118, MT5330-008 DF. Trying to locate specs on the drives. I will be trying to reuse them as they were working fine before the controller went south. I have downloaded the software for Mach2 and played with it a little, following the manual, which I’ve downloaded and printed, too. So far, I absolutely love it. I have all the phone numbers and web addresses of all concerned, but thought I’d ask here first as a few of you have been in my shoes.
I find the yahoo board terribly cumbersome and some of my posts have been lost to cyber space. I haven’t found a way to search it yet, either. First off, if the break out board. The manual talks about them, but doesn’t give a suggestion or preference for one. Do you all have a preference?
If so, please advise with websites, or personal contacts (or sell me one of yours). Secondly is the Gecko drives. I’ve been to their site and it looks like I need the 320 or 340. Does that depend primarily on what servos I have? I’m not sure exactly what my specs are yet, still trying to locate info.
I have their phone number and will call if I don’t get the answers here. Lastly, the manual talks about EMO buttons (physical ones as opposed to the virtual one in the software). How have you all gone about mounting them? On the same note, is the keyboard as cumbersome to use as it looks? After running “regular” controllers for 15 years, it’s just weird to be using a mouse to select what I want to do and using arrow keys to make the moves. Have you all made separate boxes for your jog buttons, cycle start, EMO, etc? I’ve read about people making MPG’s out of encoders and that looks inviting.
Also read about using the mouse wheel as an MPG. So, that’s it for now, there will be plenty more to come.
Thanks in advance. First off, if the break out board.

Really depends on what you need I have a PMDX 122 and love it, gets its power from the USB so no seperate power supply needed but it is limited to 1 relay so if you are needing to control a lot of things like flood, mist, spindle etc then possibly its not the one for you. Bob Campbell/Jim Cullins do nice breakouts and also there are extremely cheap one at CNC4PC of which I have heard good reports.

Have you all made separate boxes for your jog buttons, cycle start, EMO, etc? The keyboard and mouse are OK but not great IMO, I have a panel made up with buttons and MPG ( Use Ipac to interface the buttons) and hardly touch the keyboard/mouse now but on my next build I have a touch screen, still have a panel in case the screen doesnt work out as good as I think it will, time will tell. I’ve read about people making MPG’s out of encoders and that looks inviting.
Also read about using the mouse wheel as an MPG. Mouse is no use really for MPG AFAIK you can only really use it as a Jog for a single axis, but maybe I am wrong. Encloders are OK and should work well but I think nothing beats the looks and feel of an MPG made for the task. Cod4 promod bots download. I have a Nemicon that I got through the Bulk buy on Yahoo group but think do them and also he has a closed loop interface for use with Mach which looks interesting. Chevy, Good reply by Hood above, covers most things. I'd like to adddress your Yahoo group problem.
