Re: Shower cartridge - Moen, can't get out Author: LemonPlumber (FL) You pull the steel out of the middle and melt or drill away the top and or bottom only portion of the plastic then remove the pieces.stay off the brass and the barrel will be ready to receive the new 1222.You are using a non-MOEN tool if it has teeth and turns.I have tried them and they make the steel removal less likely without help.Once the guts are out you have between 11 and 1 and 5 and 7 to scratch. If your removing this because the hot stopped flowing you missed the easiest of cures. Re: Shower cartridge - Moen, can't get out Author: mpscheiner (CA) If you cartride says HC on it, it's a positemp cartridge, not a 1225 catridge, the puller is for the 1225. Try taking a pair of large channel locks, put the throwt of the channel locks around the brass stem, grip it hard, and leverage the nose of the channel locks on the side of the brass valve body. That should allow you to pull the stem out without pulling on the valve in the wall. Put a pair of vice grips on the brass stem, then hold the valve body in place with one hand while pulling the vise grips with the other.
I've never not been able to get a positemp stem out???? You only have to make it budge 1/8' or so and it will come out easy from there. Drilling it will work too, but if you scratch that valve body with the drill bit you'll have to replace the whole valve.
You could try heating a hack saw blade to red hot with a tourch and cutting/melting the plastic into peices. I've done that with success on plasic moen faucet cartridges a couple times. Still be carefull but the blade won't hurt the valve body. It will smell bad though. Re: Shower cartridge - Moen, can't get out Author: hj (AZ) quote; let them tell you how to remove it All they know is that you use a 'puller'. I have many different pullers and each has its own ideosyncrasies.
When a Moen cartridge faucet begins to leak or have other problems, the standard solution is to replace the cartridge. This is an easy job and is made even easier with the use of one of two handy tools.
Sometimes I have to show other plumbers how to remove the core, and other times I do it for them. You may have gone past your 'level of incompetency', but if not call a plumber before you make it 'impossible', (actually it is never impossible, but can be very difficult and expensive), for him to remove it. I've changed faucet cartridges before, quite easy but this Moen 1225 was a real PITA. It was stuck very tightly.
